It is important to note that while Laptops offer amazing portability and power, it is less flexible than a desktop whose part can be changed or upgraded. Therefore, once you’ve made your choice, you’re practically stuck with that.

There are a range of factors to consider however when buying a laptop, like portability  (size), versatility (specifications), brand and cost. These are discussed below to help you make the right choice while assessing your needs.

Laptop Buying Guides

1. Choose An Operating System Platform

Most Laptops comes pre-loaded with an Operating System and of course for a good reason, you get the Original. The Operating Systems (OS) you can find pre-loaded on Laptops are Windows OS, Mac OS and Chrome OS. It is sometimes not easy to make this choice as there are many reviews about the strength and weaknesses of the Operating Systems. However, your budget among other things is one determining factor here. Consider each one briefly:

  • Microsoft’s Windows OS: Windows is deemed the most flexible Operating system as it is available on more brands and models than mac and chrome os. It also has a wider price range for its laptops, from a budget price to high-end costly laptops. Because of its flexibility, it offers a wide array of features from touch screen to finger prints. Windows 10 is the latest version of the OS and comes with a digital assistant called Cortana powered by artificial Intelligence
  • Apple’s MacOS: MacOS offers similar functionality to Windows 10 but with a quite distinct User Interface. The OS comes pre-loaded only on Apple’s MacBook Devices, making less flexible and costlier that Windows OS Laptops. None of MacOS laptop has a touchscreen but the OS is more Fluid in nature and stable. It also comes with a digital assistant called Siri.
  • Google’s Chrome OS: Not so common, found on less expensive devices called chromebook such as the Samsung Chromebook 3. Chrome Os is simple and secure, but way limited than windows and Mac OS. The main app on Chromebooks is the chrome browser. The downside is that many of the web apps on it don’t work well offline. Chromebooks are generally great for users who is looking for a device to surf the web, check email, navigate social media and chat online at a lower price and great battery power.

2. Choose The Right Size For You

This is very important if you plan to move around with your laptop. Laptop sizes are generally categorized by their display sizes. Here are a few size specifications

  • 11 to 12 inches: Laptops with this size are usually very thin and light weight. Great for portability.
  • 13 to 14 inches: With this size you get laptops that are balanced with both portability and good features.
  • 15 inches: This is the most popular size of laptops available today. Great for larger display size.
  • 17 to 18 inches: This are usually laptops that are not meant to be carried about always as the are larger and weightier making them less portable. However, they are usually built to have high processing power.

3. Choose your Specs

Laptop Component like the processor, hard drive, RAM, and Graphics Chip sizes are the major Specification that will determine the price and usability of your laptop. It is important to give a good consideration to these specifications and your personal needs to see how they match before buying a laptop.

  • CPU(Processor) : Simply this is the brain of your computer, it has huge influence on performance. However, depending on what you want to use it for, even the least expensive may be good for you, else you waste the processing power. A number of CPU to consider are
    • Intel Xeon: Extremely powerful and expensive processors for large workstations (e.g the laptops with 17 to 18 inches). This is highly recommended for professionals in 3D modelling and video editing. However, it is lower on battery life.
    • Intel Core i7: This allows for faster gaming and high level productivity.
    • Intel Core i5: Offers great combination of price and performance.
    • Intel Core i3: The performance is just a step below Core i5 and so is the price.
    • AMD: Found on low cost laptops, it provides decent performance for the money. Good enough for web surfing, media and productivity.
    • Intel Pentium / Celeron: Offers the slowest performance in the range of Intel Chip series and can compete with the some AMDs. If your main tasks are web surfing and document editing, this is great for you.
  • RAM: Ideally, 4GB of RAM averagely Ok for most users and if you can spend more 8GB will be Great.
  • Hard Drive: This is where everything on your laptop is Housed. The performance of the Hard drive (Storage Drive) is highly important. If you can afford it and don’t need a great deal of internal storage, get a laptop with Solid State Drive (SSD) rather than the traditional hard disk drive. It offers at least three time the speed
  • Display: This is usually referred to as screen resolution. The higher the resolution, the sharper and clearer the laptop appears. However higher resolution laptops consumes more power.
  • Graphics Chips: High-end Graphics chips are costlier but great for users who want to use their laptops for 3D modeling and Video Editing. For others, low-end graphics chips will do just fine
  • Ports: Availability of ports are greatly important for usability, as it is helpful when you get the connections you need right on the system. So check for HDMI and USB ports.
  • DVD Drive: Not absolutely necessary as all software and media files can be downloaded or transferred. However, if you need to read/write discs, you can go for a laptop with DVD Drive or simply by an external DVD Drive

4. Consider The Battery Life

One of the beauty of laptops is its portability and backup battery. Choosing a laptop with longer battery life lets you use it for longer where there is no power supply.

5. Plan With Your Budget and Consider The Brand

After Considering the most important features that meets your need, then try to find the best deal available. One major factor in doing this is to consider the brand. Different brands that has the same specification will have different prices. Brands like Lenovo, HP, Dell, Asus and Apple are highly reputable.
