I found quite a few explanation on this but the most common is this; Black Friday is the Day after Thanksgiving in the United States. This day, though not officially an holiday, is usually set aside as the beginning of the shopping season for Christmas. This is always marked with a surge in the numbers of shoppers. As a result, some employers – in the US – give a day off for their workers.

Why it is called Black Friday?

The first known mention of Black Friday was in November 1951, when it was used to describe the issue of people calling in sick after the Thanksgiving day so they could have a day off work. At the same time, the term ‘Black Friday’ was used by Bus drivers and Police in the US to describe the heavy traffic that occurs on city streets, the day after Thanksgiving as shoppers make their way to retail shops.

A more positive explanation was giving by business owners, as the prevailing one connotes a negative tone. They presented Black Friday as the day of the year when retailers finally begin to turn in profit for the year. Usually, in accounting, Red ink is used in recording a loss while Profits were usually shown in Black ink. Thus, the reason for Black Friday.
